Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng was born 21/11/1985. Chieng is currently a Senior Correspondent for The
Daily Show, Comedy Central. Chieng is the creator and lead actor on the sitcom
Ronny Chieng International Student. The show premiered on ABC Australia as well
as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a
Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng grew up both in Singapore and in the United
States, living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 until 1994. Chieng was a
part of Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013. Chieng was invited
to audition for The Daily Show's correspondent position two years after. Chieng
was selected as one of the 10 Comics to Watch in Variety's July 2016 issue. In
October 2016, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss the controversial Jesse
Watters Fox News segment which was widely believed to be racist. Chieng offers
a scathing critique of the segment on the conservative network. He also visited
New York City's Chinatown. Watters had mocked the Chinese residents and gave
respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The viral video was
featured by the Washington Post, Slate, and various other outlets. Chieng was a
Singapore Sea Scout when he was a young teen. Chieng hasn't managed to get
citizenship or permanent residence status in Australia despite living in
Australia for ten years. In the year 2018 Chieng made a joke about being
cynophobic during the Daily Show however, he later , in an interview, he said
that he was "100 per cent not scared of dogs".
